Our Story

Owner, Kate Beal embarked upon her dream of creating her own home décor shop in 2010.  Her vision has become the collaboration of many, resulting in a truly unique concept that has evolved into one of the most highly touted ateliers in West Texas.  Kate’s passion for design and her desire to bring a unique and beautiful experience to Midland,  were the driving force behind her decision to pursue her dream.

Under the guidance of the late Charles Faudree, a world-renowned interior designer and business owner Kate befriended while living in Tulsa, she created a business plan, complete with brand and vision statement.  Hyacinth’s doors opened in June 2011. Today, Hyacinth is known for its offerings of beautiful, often one-of-a-kind home accessories including lamps, tabletop décor, coffee table books, fine linens, art and myriad of other unique gifts.  In 2013, Hyacinth added an interior design department, Hyacinth at Home, to compliment the retail space. Margaret Ann Tettleton, Midland native, leads the design department.

Hyacinth is like a modern day “Designing Women” staffed by a team of women ranging from 20-something to 60-something, literally spanning five generations.  Each team member brings their own special gifts and perspectives to Hyacinth enabling us to cater to a wide range of sensibilities.

The time honored poem entitled “Hyacinths to Feed Thy Soul” has been a guiding source of inspiration since the inception of Hyacinth

If thy mortal goods thou art bereft,

And from thy slender store two loaves alone to thee are left,

Sell one, and with the dole

Buy hyacinths to feed the soul.

Penned by the 13th Persian poet Saadi, it is an eloquent expression that one does not live by bread alone,  which in Biblical terms, means that one should also live by God’s word.  It also serves as a reminder to find beauty in everyday life…when things feel hopeless, by concentrating on the beauty of the hyacinth, its smell, its color, the perfection of its flowers –we may “feed” our souls.

There are some who may see the pursuit of beauty as being trivial, but we see beauty as something that elevates the human experience from ordinary to extraordinary.  It is our desire that just as nature’s hyacinth inspires us by its beautiful form and comforting aroma, a visit to Hyacinth or perusing our website will likely do the same.  Inspiration is a beautiful thing.
